The Bell @ Standon
The Bell @ Standon
A distant relative will be visiting soon and is planning a family get together. I know there are plenty of good places to eat and drink in Ware & I intend to steer them in that direction, but they keep mentioning going to the Bell at Standon, which is where they used to live many years ago. I heard it recently changed hands .Has anyone been there recently ?

Re: The Bell @ Standon
Has virtually a new landlord every year due to Greedy King's extortionate rent + beer prices, so it maybe ok but I've not been in recently. If its no good.......... The Star @ Standon is a beautifully run pub with decent ale from the GK stable, great garden + lovely food; landlord Geoff has been there a few years now.
Re: The Bell @ Standon
We tried the Bell 3 times, the first time it was shut, something to do with no water and the second time wasn't brilliant. about 4 customers yet the bar was uncleared and sopping wet. Our drinks were served in a small lake of liquid, but as the landlord wasn't around, we thought we would go back another time to really give it a fair go.
Meeting the landlord is where it failed epically. He barely seemed to want to serve us drinks. When asked what bitters he had we were told 'just one'. When pressed as to what he was going to do in the future, the reply of 'dunno' was beginning to really set the scene. Our glasses were snatched away as the the drink was finished with no attempt to serve another.
Whilst the landlord may have been practically mute behind the bar, when it came to talking to his group of friends who had obviously been imported from his last establishment, he was remarkably vocal, it was just a shame every other word was a swear word. Whilst some swearing is to be expected in a pub, this was somewhat excessive.
I would suggest a visit yourself to make your own mind up, but based on our experience, unless you want your relative to become even more distant, take the advice of KPB and go to the Star, much more convivial.
