Lidl to pay the living wage

Post by Pat-H »

Delighted to hear Lidl (not Aldi) are showing the other supermarkets it can be done.

Its still amazing to hear discussions on why some people shouldn't be paid enough to live on.

The statement itself is somewhat offensive.

And I note that because they don't pay staff for break time the staff will earn less than ASDA staff being paid almost £1 per hour less. So an advance, but hardly brilliant.

Exactly what I was thinking :)

And the story isn't even about Aldi - it's Lidl who've announced they're paying the living ware.

Your right it's Lidl.
I know we don't have a Lidl but I suspect Ware folks do shop and have to decide where to shop.
Maybe some will feel it useful to know just how their local supermarkets compare in terms of paying their staff?
Maybe enough to choose where they shop, even if it's not local.
We may even have some local folk who work in supermarkets who it's relevant to?

Are you suggesting people should avoid shopping in Ware shops because of this?

I think people should consider more than just the price tag and convenience when shopping.

This is an interesting site to compare companies:

http://www.payscale.com

It shows a Retail sales assistant at ASDA can earn £9,933 - £16,865
Same job at Lidl (and this is before the announced increase) £11,488 - £20,448

Aldi actually pay more currently at £14,055 - £20,638

Tesco including bonus £13,323 - £17,346 (no idea what you have to do to qualify for bonus but you stand to loss up to £1,500 if you don't get it)

As we have an Asda and Tesco hopefully this is locally relevant.

Right-o. Aldi...good....Asda bad. I shall gas up the guzzler and pop down to Hoddes.......dam...what about the Polar Bears!! scratch that idea.

On second thoughts, I shall walk and avoid Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's and only use the shops on the high Street....now....do we have a list of which of those are paying the living wage??

Given people don't seem to care about child labour and sweat shops so long as their clothes are cheap.
Buy the biggest gas guzzler they can find despite all the warnings about the effect
And are quite happy for thousands of farms to go out of business rather than pay a couple of pence more for milk

why do you suppose anyone gives a toss
