There are several reasons that XH558 is to be grounded but Rolls Royces and BAe withdrawing their support is a major issue that decided its fate it is similar to Concorde's demise where Rolls Royces and Airbus withdrew support.
Sadly it was always going to happen some day we just have to appreciate them in the air while we can, I would have liked Buccaneers and Lightnings to still be flying but have the memories.

Yes a sad day indeed.
But aren't we being selfish to want to see these aged machines flying? Ultimately something will fail and with a plane that's normally the end of it.
Its not like an old car where you can stop bash it with a hammer an carry on.
Better to park them up and admire them for generations to come than have just videos and pictures to remember them by.

Torn between heading up the A10 and parking up shortly before Buntingford, or heading over to North Weald...

I've been wondering where to try and see it too. How low do we think it will fly between the waypoints? It may just be a noise above the clouds....

EDIT - forecast looks good for tomorrow!

Judging from the photos and videos posted on #558spotted - it flies pretty low.

I was up at Westmill Farm for the last tour, and it was flying decently low.

There wouldn't be too much point in flying too high! And they have said that if weather scuppered flying they'd look to reschedule to another weekend.

Decided where to watch from Alec? I had been thinking of going through the lanes over towards Much Hadham, as the countryside is nice and open. Hopefully as we are fairly close to the North Weald waypoint they won't deviate from the flight path too much by the time they get near Ware.

Ended up opting for the safe option of North Weald in the end. A bit of a mass migration of middle-aged men with long lensed cameras, mind!

But definitely worth it, XH588 did a very crowd pleasing flypast, then circuit of the airfield flying right overhead, with a couple of steep banking turns - nice!

I studied the flight path and decided Buntingford would be a good location.
We got there in plenty of time only to be see it fly a mile further west than was indicated.
A bit disappointing, but we did see it.... just.
