Westmill Landfill
Re: Westmill Landfill
Logged a call this evening at 1900 due to smell starting around 1700. Gave it a 3 out of 6 when asked
Re: Westmill Landfill
To my surprise I met the Environment Agency chap having a 'sniff round' .. He said there had been 6 calls this evening so as nothing major was going on he came to inspect. Fortunately, although the smell had nearly gone where I was he had smelt it elsewhere and will write a report accordingly. First time I've met somebody as a result of a call which is encouraging.
Re: Westmill Landfill
I took my boys to westmill three lakes last night camping. Either the wind was blowing in the 'wrong' direction or it was very bad early this morning. It must do wonders for repeat camping business.
Re: Westmill Landfill
Hi RCR1, do you mind if I ask where abouts you are and how often you have problems?
Re: Westmill Landfill
Once again a summers evening ruined buy the stench of rotting eggs! This is wrong, we shouldn't have to put up with this. 17.00 24/6/14 Richmond Close.
Re: Westmill Landfill
Hi Jacko,
If you wouldn't mind looking at my original post, I'm mainly looking for advice as I am considering moving to the area. How often do you experience problems where you are?
Many thanks.

We are aware that recently there was a significant spike in reports of odour from Westmill Landfill site. We have investigated the matter and have come to the following conclusions:
Cause:
As part of the ongoing development of the site we have needed to construct a haul road to the cell currently being built (cell 8), as a result of this new road some of the onsite gas collection infrastructure needed moving. Although we took a number of preventative measures in carrying out this work and initially it appeared that it had been successfully completed without any odour release we now think that this work in conjunction with a change in the weather was the cause.
Unfortunately this incident coincided with the site’s quarterly flare service. The service was completed on Tuesday 24th June which is when the complaints were at their peak. When carrying out the flare service the Gas extraction systems have to be temporarily shut down to allow maintenance to be carried out. We also used the time to replace a gas manifold that had a stress fracture which would otherwise have meant another system shutdown.
Outcome:
The gas infrastructure that needed to be moved has now been moved and sealed into its new location. Extra gas extraction pipes have also been laid in this area. We are confident that any odour from the source has now been stopped. We will not need to move any other items in the near future so this particular issue should not reoccur.
In consultation with the environment agency we have agreed to begin the flare service earlier in the morning in order to allow any odour produced to disperse in the early afternoon and not stretch into the evening. We will also continue to look into ways of reducing odour produced at this time.
Should you detect an odour from the landfill at any time we would ask you where possible to report it either to ourselves Westmill landfill site on 01920 462163 or to the Environment Agency on 0800 80 70 60 whereupon we will endeavor to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Re: Westmill Landfill
Be grateful we don't live in Bromley - anyone see the BBC local news tonight?
Re: Westmill Landfill
In fairness Winifred, the incidence of pongs from Westmill seems to be declining. Probably about once a month these days.
Re: Westmill Landfill
Really, what part of town are you in Jacko? Must be a seasonal wind direction thing. I am noticing it a lot more than once a month.
