I agree with MAtt40. The dump is far worse than usual at the moment, it's a rare day over the past month when I haven't smelt something.

I'm quite surprised by the last couple of comments as I've been trying to drive over regularly to see what it's like and I've not smelled anything, is it certain times of day or just all day? It's an odd thing to say but I wish it would smell when I go over so I know what I'm letting myself in for! Would any of you say it's bad enough not to move to the area, or is it more of an annoyance? Apologies for all the questions, just trying to get as much information as I can.

Hi Winifred, definitely not a problem big enough to avoid the area. For me in the past month it has been riving past the site in the evenings, almost every single evening the smell by the roundabout at the A10/A602 junction has been horrible. There have been a handful of times when the smell came down the hill to our house, but those were few.

...could that smell be to do with the Hanbury drains thing perhaps? They have the road up at the moment just by Hanbury Manor on the old A10, I think to fix this problem.

Thanks for clarifying mb1, can be so difficult to determine from messages in here. We drove over on Sunday and couldn't smell anything as usual (not that that's a bad thing!) so decided to take a walk over to the landfill itself. We walked up Poles Lane and about half way up, level with where they are currently filling we could smell egg, which I assume is what the people on here have been describing? Until recently I had assumed it was a 'rubbish' smell like when you're driving behind a bin lorry but I'm guessing what we were smelling was the methane being released. The good thing was that it didn't seem to smell until we were right next to it and certainly haven't smelled that when we have been to the property so fingers crossed it will be ok. We will be planting plenty of smelly plants in the garden and lighting a barbeque to mask it if it is ever bad!

It may be that the weather is a factor or that the 'leaks' are from different parts of the site but the smell doesn't seem to be as frequent as it was in the past. At least not in Richmond Close (top of Watton Road).

I could, of course, be becoming immune to it or my olfactory sense is now completely shot!

Indeed. The rain doesn't seem to disperse the smell either.

Seems to be worse after heavy rain, I suspect that rain water is percolating down into the landfill and displacing gases , which are then 'pumped' into the atmosphere. :(
