Public Meeting to Oppose Power Station Plans
An Artists Impression of the New Power Plant

Over 320 people attended a public meeting organised by the Burning Issue Group - Ware, which formed to oppose plans by Biffa Waste Services to develop a power plant in Ware.

In September of this year, the company announced plans to build a facility at its Westmill landfill site, adjacent to the A10/A602 junction in Ware, on land already consented for future landfill.

The public meeting, held at Wodson Park on Friday 27th, received overwhelming support  and raised almost £500 pounds in the fundraising collection.

Stuart Storey opened the meeting and introduced the speakers who were all committed to providing a reasoned argument against incinerators in general and Biffa's proposal in particular.

The tenor of the meeting was that this should not become a group railing against change, but an informed, cogent and adult discussion of the issues.

First to speak was Gordon Dawes who gave an outline of Biffa's proposal. Martin Butcher and Tabitha Evans then hightlighted those concerns which arise from the proposal.

Tabitha's messages on the emissions from incinerators was particularly chilling. Another Way Forward was then presented by Mercedes Price of Greenerday Ltd who explaned that there are better ways to deal with waste than to burn it.

David Ashton, a seasoned campaigner of 'Herts Without Waste' was highly complimentary about the presentation's content and then put the whole into a wider perspective. A vibrant Q&A session followed and it became clear that the vast majority of the audience were supporting B.I.G.

Commenting on behalf of Burning Issue Group (B.I.G.), Martin Butcher Said. "We shall need to be on our mettle for the next phase and with such a wonderful group of people behind us, Biffa need to be aware that we aren't going to lie down whilst they make a mess of our wonderful town."
