From the menu of the Cambridge restaurant it seems that high end means extremely expensive, roughly double the price of the Kingshill chippy or £10 for cod and chips for one. Seems more than a bit steep to me.

And don't get me started on Wrights being closed on Mondays! The number of times that's caught me out...
Traditionally fish & chip shops closed on Monday as the trawlers didn't work on Sunday so there was no fresh fish. That's why you should never buy fish on Monday :)

The fact that I'm veggie and so don't eat fish may explain that, then. Also explains why I have different views of some chippies from others, as I judge purely on chip quality (and quantity - Andrews!!!)

That's kind of what I expected. If the quality improvement or differentiation is enough, then it may be worth it - as long as they're in a market who's prepared to pay for the privilege. The eat-in market may have more appeal here.

I return to my analogy of the Islington high end fish & chip shop (other poncy London areas too) where people will pay for that kind of place. I suspect there are enough people in Cambridge who would. Not sure about Ware, but I suspect/hope the prospective proprietors have done their homework.

Made me smile that, in amongst the Wasabi Sauce etc they also do Mushy Peas.

I wonder about the homework point and whether they have just made assumptions. I recall one guy (not on Ware) who opened an expensive fitted kitchen shop in an area where property prices are much higher than here. He assumed (as he told me) that people living there must mean they had lots of money - he went bust fairly quickly. As was pointed out to him - living there was exactly why they didn't.

Does Ware have the increasing numbers of punters to fill the ever growing number of eating places (more on the way) or is it simply spreading the existing ones more thinly thereby placing all in jeopardy.

Given that we all spend most of our time surfing for porn maybe their lack of a home delivery service will count against them.

The reason why traditionally fish and chip shops are not open on Mondays is because the fishing boats don't, or didn't, go out on Sundays so the fish would not be fresh.

seeing this thread has brough back some funny memories from when i moved down to ware over 20 + years ago, being a ye old northern lad, chippy's were everywhere and taste and quantity differed from place to place, my experience of having a chippy meal for the first time in Ware was on my sencond night here and i went in wrights and i calmly asked for a chip barm with gravy, the look i got back was of i was some sort of alien, anyway as i looked for something else i did notice some orange sausage like things which to be honest i had never seen before, you guys know them as Savaloys but to me they were toxic worms  anyway with regards to the current crop of chippy's we have i don't see why we need a posh chippy, if it's as expensive as what's been said on here then i'm avoiding big time, out of the 4 we have ( i presume it's 4 as i don't know of any more) Andrews are far superior to any other, prices are good and the portion sizes are huge in comparison to the others who's portion sizes leave a lot to be desired and the cost does not reflect in my view value for money. If this new high end chippy is to survive then they surely will have to lower prices as i can't see many people paying a tenner for fish and chips...

Am I missing something? Looking at the take away menu, it's £4.95 for cod, and £1.60 for chips. Which makes £6.55.

And that shows how different we all are. I know many who prefer Wrights to Andrews, maybe partly out of tradition, but also because of what they get. Personally, I'm an Andrews fan but sometimes have a need for Andrews - and appreciate the diversity. Of the other two chippies, I've never been to Kingshill - not local - and have gone off Bills after some variable quality results.

There has been a 5th chippy, started off about 10 years ago as The Codfather in Cromwell Road. I remember the original guise being very good, but it's changed hands & food styles every year or two since opening, and have had poor experiences since. I suspect there isn't the custom there.

I welcome the choice that the new place looks like it's offering - but wait to see if it's truly different. And most importantly, how many people feel it's worth the cost.

I Hadn't looked at the acual menu and just noticed someone had said they were expensive, having looked on there i think they have looked at the eat in menu as that is way more expensive than the takeaway
