Dickensian Evening

Post by craig »

One of the things people always complain about during Dickensian evening, is the lack of people dressing up.
Who is going to add to the atmosphere by sporting some Dickensian outfits - even a top hat would be a start?

Yes - a top hat with LEDS would be good - i'll look out for you.
Glad you're getting into the spirit of things.

Anyone else going to contribute to making Dickensian evening for Dickensian?
It's a community event organised for the community, by the community.

Seems ideal given the tacky merch peddled by the street traders

Given that street traders are licensed by the District Council and beyond the control of the organizing committee, all we can do is hope no one buys anything from them. If no-one bought their products, they wouldn't come Dickensian evening!

SO - who's getting involved?

They are not completely beyond the control of the organising committee! They still have to pay a fee for their pitch on the night, which entitles them to trade at a private event. Any that just turn up on the night are approached to check whether they are pre-booked and paid, confirmed by the possession of a badge provided by us. Any that do not have one are asked to pay up an enhanced fee or leave. If they refuse, the local constabulary escorts them from the event.

If they have paid they are entitled to sell whatever they want. Nobody has to buy it!

More to the point, these guys pay alot more for their pitches than locals to sell their tat which in turn keeps the costs down for the local organisations, so they can raise much needed funds and pays for the expenses of running the event which I can't imagine is cheap....

The town was packed tonight with an absolutely brilliant atmosphere. The hats (minus flashing lights) worked a treat. Very well done to Jan Wing who organised it and isn't doing any more. (She wants herb sanity back. Volunteers needed to take over and hopefully have some organising skills). She got a great email earlier from someone who travelled 160 miles (or some such) only to be told that it was last Friday. Where is Tavistock?

All the complainers; now is your chance to help out! Come and join in. Don't leave it to the same old people. New faces required.

Craig was taking photos so hopefully they'll be on the home page of WOL soon.

Thumbs up to everyone who was there.

yes lots of people and also lots of idiots as well, i have 3 beefs with the night, some people just don't have any comprehension for the fact some people have young children and would rather barge past, push, shove etc and it's not amusing, second is the damn glow stick / light-sabre people, they need to be banned as a fiver for one small one is a complete rip and you get held to ransom by your kids, and 3rd to the people who sort out where the stalls go, please can you move the stalls from the " i can't get on to see what's on there because there are too many people and too many stalls all squashed in a small area square" how about moving them to the high street so there is more to see rather than glow stick city, apart from that i enjoy it....

Move the stalls out of Tudor Square onto the High Street and put all the glowstick sellers in there? The lights would make almost make a feature in themselves.
