Ware Town Council Community and Environment Committee

Post by mb1 »

From the Community and Environment Committee of Ware Town Council

Here’s an brief summary of the discussions we had earlier this week in the committee. This is just what I noted, other councillors may have other things to note.

The Ware foodbank looking for roughly 200sq ft for storage and food distribution as the Salvation Army hall is closing. Anyone who can help could contact the Council at the Priory, who can pass on offers.

The Committee confirmed a small grant to help establish some beehives on the allotments at Widbury Hill. With bee numbers dropping, this kind of support is really important, hopefully we’ll be able to report on progress later in the year.

Heritage Weekend is the 14/15 September, and the Priory will be open as usual. Other events will e advertised nearer the day.

Staff reported that the food festival in Tudor Square was a good success, with 14 stalls. We agreed to look at more specialist and farmers markets during the year.

The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trusts are planning work to revitalise the Kings Mead Nature Reserve. Ware Town Council will support their fundraising for this. (I have a .pdf discussing their plans for the Meads which I've posted on my Facebook page and couldn't add here) (https://www.facebook.com/Martin-Butcher ... 465095452/)

The Town Council is working with students at Ware College to install a mural on the footbridge over the railway line to brighten it up. More to follow.

There was a discussion about Ware’s Christmas lights. The widely shared feeling was to keep them more or less as they are, but to add lights to trees where possible, for example on the Charvill’s roundabout. Electricity supply is a problem in some places (including the roundabout) but there may well be other options including solar power for the lights.

The next meeting is in July.

I think it's good to let people know as much as possible what the Council is doing, I'll continue to post updates. I'll also post upcoming meetings and ask for people's ideas and thoughts.
