Very loud aircraft late this afternoon

Post by Steve »

Did anyone else hear a very loud aircraft fly over just after 5pm this afternoon? I checked Flightradar to see what it was but nothing was showing over the area ... and now I know why!

Seeing a fast jet out here is a rare occurrence, I'm glad there were not issues.

In this case two fast jets flying [relatively] slowly, typically around 180kts over Ware for a Stansted approach. Even at that low speed they made a hell of a roar.

I presume it was something to do with the Typhoons ' escorting ' a cargo aeroplane to Stanstead. ( See BBC website )

Yes, the sonic boom some heard earlier was apparently the Typhoons passing Mach 1 on their way to intercept a radio-silent 'Russian' cargo plane over Kent - they then escorted it into Stansted as is the normal protocol.

Not sure quite how delighted I am that, as often as not, suspect planes and hijack targets are brought in over our town.......

The aircraft was Latvian although I think the BBC may first have reported it was Russian.

I thought that when planes are sent to Stansted in a security emergency they were routed over the more rural bits of Essex with very low population density.

It was a Russian built Antanov flown by Latvian Air.

Are you sure they didn't say Russian built, as they do in the links below?
