Seems a touch harsh IGS.
Did you enquire why they had to close early? Businesses don't usually turn away custom on a whim - there is usually a good reason.
So the Drill Hall will no longer recommend The Waterside Inn. Is that the official line is it?
Perhaps the Waterside Inn won't send people to the Drill hall when asked and give equally unhelpful advice.
I said I wouldn't recommend it.
I have since had an email from the manager in reply to one I sent making enquiries about it. He said pub closes at 11pm during the week.
What we most like about this place is the spread of 'rooms' and furnishings around the building, allowing a measure of privacy and quiet during the day, so you can actually hear what your colleague or guest is saying! Its a visually interesting space and never too crowded.
They do an excellent tea and coffee service through the day, so it makes a brilliant alternative to Costa, especially when all the mumsnpramsntots are in town.
The Waterside is 'thinking about' doing cakes as well, meanwhile you can have 2 for one on their chocolate cake dessert which was excellent value.
I have joined this forum as I just wanted to say that I have been using this venue for a while and felt that it deserves some credit, the new manager has introduced some nice touches, I visited there for lunch with work colleagues in the week and all were extremely pleased with the food and last night I went with my family and the atmosphere was lovely, also the children had drawing and books to look through. Well done to the waterside in and the new manager

IGS your attitude and stance on this has truly disgusted me. It's both uneducated and sad. Has being denied 30 minutes of drinking really upset you that much?
All pub business which are owned by a larger company/brewery work to very very tight wage percentages. Most off the time too tight. Managers constantly get emails from head office telling them to trim wage costs. So if A business has little or no customers at the end of the night, but say three members of staff on that are costing money, it makes perfect sense to shit a bit early.
Next time I come to Ware I fully expect The Drill Hall to be open even if there is no event going on. Also, you better avoid a fair few other pubs in town as they shut early too and slow evenings.

Some people seem to be easily disgusted and I can't see what is “uneducated” about it. In my post I used first person singular not third person plural.
I received a nice email from the new manager reiterating that they were open until 11pm Monday to Thursday and midnight Friday and Saturday. If we had thought the pub closed early then we would have gone elsewhere.
Since the email from the new manager I'm quite happy to recommend the place again. (Please note the use of first person singular).

I also have no problem with pubs shutting at whatever time they please. However this should be made clear to customers. You can't inform people that last orders is 10:50, and then stop serving at 10:30. It's not the 30 minutes of drinking time, but the 30 minutes of socialising time that's lost.
There is an expectation that a pub (if open) will stop serving at 11:00 in an evening, and any variation really ought to be clearly notified well in advance.

From the email I received:
I have told... all the other team members that we serve until 11pm during the week and 12 midnight at the weekend.
Hopefully that should clear it up. No mention of Sunday though.
Standard closing time for a Sunday is 10:30pm usually. However on their website they state it is 11pm which is later than any of the other pubs in Ware [to my knowledge].

Old Bull's Head opens until 11pm on Sunday and I'm sure there are others.
There is. a policy in place in the Drill Hall that if anyone tries to get into the place whilst kid groups are using the venue (and you are not a parent or guardian) then the police will be called. (Open to interpretation).
