I know there are red kites around Ware but yesterday afternoon a large raptor swooped down on our lawn picked up something and flew away. Its wing span seemed too big for a kite and looked very similar to photos I have taken of a Harris Hawk. Has any one else seen this bIrd in the Tower Rd area of Ware ?

Actually, just looking it up, it seems kites are bigger than harris hawks

Red kite wingspan - 175–179 cm.
Harris hawk wingspan - 100 - 120cm.

Hope the hawk is found safe and well.

Richard you are quite right about the size. I have only seen a Red Kite in flight so it seemed to me to be smaller than the Harris Hawk that I had on my gloved hand when I was photographing it. Although I must say the bird I saw yesterday when it swooped down in my garden did have the same markings as the Harris, and the females can be 35% bigger than the males.
